SHELTER FROM THE STORM is a color photograph of a small wooden porch structure attached to the exterior of a Tudor brick building, tucked into the angle between a cylindrical tower and a flat wall. The porch is very old — the timber frame weathered to dark grey and mossy green, the wood split and checked with age, the leaded diamond-pane glazing above the door dark with time and grime. A steeply pitched roof of plain clay tiles caps the structure, its ridge mossy and slightly sagging. The door itself is narrow and planked, set back in shadow under a Gothic-arched opening. Behind and around the porch, the Tudor brickwork rises in warm orange-red courses, the mortar pale and irregular, the whole wall carrying the particular density of something built to last and then simply left to do so. The porch is an addition to a building that was already old when it was added — a shelter appended to a shelter, successive generations making it their own.
It is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
