Selfridges

SELFRIDGES is a color photograph shot from above in the atrium of Selfridges department store in London, looking straight down through multiple floors so that the image loses its conventional orientation entirely. A cluster of mannequins stands on a lower balcony, seen from directly above as a ring of smooth, dark, bald heads around a display counter lit by a halo of spotlights — close enough to human to read as a crowd, strange enough, from this angle, to stop you. Above the mannequins, the atrium opens upward through multiple levels — blue Denim Studio banners stripe across the upper floors, track lighting multiplies into diagonals, and the escalators and balustrades layer over each other until the eye loses track of which floor is which. The photograph is about the experience of a certain kind of retail space — vertiginous, saturated, designed to disorient — and it succeeds on those terms completely.

It is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
