Samara
SAMARA is a color photograph of a massive tree trunk, shot close and flat so that the deeply furrowed bark fills the entire frame, grey and monumental, with no sky, no ground, no sense of scale beyond the bark itself. Near the center-left, almost lost in the texture, a single samara clings to a crevice — one winged seed, still green-gold, the only color in the image. The trunk is old enough that its bark has developed into something architectural, ridge upon ridge of grey wood, and the samara against it is so small and so vivid that the eye finds it immediately and then can't quite believe it was there all along.
The image is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
