PRIVATE PROPERTY is a black-and-white landscape photograph, taken in Denver in 1973, of a rectangular metal sign mounted on a chain-link fence. It was shot close and straight-on of a sign that reads PRIVATE PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING in large, bold capital letters, the typography blunt and authoritative. The chain-link diamond pattern overlays the entire image, its wire grid softening slightly out of focus while the sign behind it remains sharp; the background beyond the fence is a pale, blown-out blur of light. The composition is confrontational — the sign fills the frame, the fence stands between viewer and subject, the message is unambiguous, but Rick took the photograph anyway, which is the only thing worth saying about the sign's authority.
It is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, scanned from the original negative, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
