Perpendicularity

PERPENDICULARITY is a black-and-white photograph of a metal handrail running along a concrete walkway, receding diagonally toward a vanishing point at the upper left; the railing is a simple pipe construction, its vertical posts bolted to the concrete at regular intervals; bright, raking sunlight strikes the railing from the right, casting a second railing in shadow — dark, precise, and perfectly parallel to the original — across the pale concrete surface; the shadows are as structural as the steel, doubling every vertical and horizontal line into a grid of right angles; a few dry weeds push through a crack at the base of one post, the only soft thing in the frame; the image is a geometry lesson and a magic trick — the sun has built a second railing out of nothing but light and angle.

The image is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
