Matz Farmstead Ruins

MATZ FARMSTEAD RUINS is a color photograph of a close-up section of a dry-stone farm wall, shot flat so that the surface fills the frame entirely — no sky, no context, no scale, just the wall's long, patient life written in stone and lichen. Irregular stones of grey, blue, and ochre are mortared together with aged, crumbling render; cracks radiate between them, tracing the slow negotiation between rock and time. The surface is colonized by lichen in vivid chartreuse and yellow-green, spreading in flat crusty patches, with one dense cushioned mound of darker moss at center-left. A dark horizontal timber is just visible at the bottom edge of the frame. The farmhouse was built around 1907 and burned in 1949, leaving only the stone walls and foundation. The shell has stood open to the weather ever since — preserved as part of a rural county park — long enough for the lichen to make it their own.

The image is an original fine art photograph by Rick Graves, printed on exhibition-quality paper with Epson SureColor pigment inks. Hand-packed and shipped from our local post office in Spring Green, WI.
